Weekends in Kingwood: Trails, the Lake, and the Livable Forest

Kingwood markets itself as "The Livable Forest," and for once the slogan is accurate. The community was designed in the 1970s around the existing pine and hardwood canopy instead of scraping it away, so the trees are the architecture. The greenbelt system threads through every village, connecting schools, parks, and the lake. From Greentree Village you can pick up a path near home and be under canopy within minutes. The Kingwood Service Association maintains the trails, parks, and community amenities, with more than 500 acres of open space across the community.

Deer Ridge Park for real Saturday energy

It has a duck pond with fountains, playgrounds, picnic areas, soccer and baseball fields, basketball and tennis courts, and a nature trail. It is the kind of park where you go for one activity and stay for three, and where youth sports practices fill the weekday evenings.

Lake Houston, minutes away

Kingwood hugs the western and northwestern shore of Lake Houston, so boating, fishing, and shoreline walks are all part of the local rhythm. The San Jacinto River feeds the lake at its north end, and Kings Harbor by the water has become the gathering spot for dinner with a sunset view. From Brook Shadow Dr, the lake is a short drive, not a road trip.

Weekends are not all trails. Kingwood Drive and Town Center hold the everyday stuff: crepes and coffee at Coco Crepes, local roasts at Javaman Coffee, tacos at Torchy's, and barbecue counter at True Texas BBQ. The nice part is that none of it requires parking in a dowtown garage.
